Tinnitus (tin it tuss) is any noise that comes from inside your ears. It can be ringing, hissing or humming. Sometimes it seems to have a pulse of its own. There are many causes of tinnitus but it is commonly associated with noise exposure or certain medications. It can be increased by stress, alcohol, caffeine, and sleep deprivation. It is usually heard in both ears but can affect one or the other individually. Rarely, it can herald a serious condition or tumor in your ear or brain. Evaluating tinnitus is usually done in concert with hearing testing. Treating tinnitus is focused on finding the cause and prevention. Treatment also includes tinnitus retraining and tinnitus masking therapies.
