The vestibular system acts as an internal compass, providing information about spatial orientation and equilibrium. When this system is not functioning sufficiently, dizziness and imbalance is the result. Dizziness can be felt in many ways and is the number one reason people over the age of 75 visit their doctor. This can be felt in many ways, such as:
- Lightheadedness
- Spinning
- Wooziness
- Unsteadiness
- Swaying
- Tilting
During physical therapy, you will be assessed for the causes of your symptoms and a full balance analyzes will be performed. These tests will include:
- Positional Vertigo testing
- Strength tests
- Gait analysis
- Gaze stability
- Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system deficits
- Cervical mobility and stability
Following this assessment, an individualized treatment plan will be determined. This may include training of the visual system, postural exercises, addressing the fear of falling, walking on uneven surfaces and maneuvers to reduce your dizziness. Upon completion on physical therapy you will have a decreased risk of falling, improved independence during daily activities, increased static and dynamic balance and better posture.
