Most people know that winter brings increased risks of slipping, tripping, and falling. But there are some very simple ways to reduce this likelihood. These include:
- Wearing footwear with good grip. Choose soles made from rubber, or neoprene to provide good traction. Avoid plastic, or leather soles
- Keep hands free when walking – do not walk with hands in pockets
- Use handrails when available
- Keep walkways safe – salt prior to snow and clear debris, water and ice
- If you suspect an icy surfaces, test it by tapping with your foot first
- Keep your eyes looking at where you are going
- Walk slowly on slippy/icy surfaces
- If you know the weather is bad, plan your route ahead of time and leave yourself extra time to get to your destination
- Walk on designated sidewalks and walkways as much as possible
- If you must walk over ice, take shorter steps, or shuffle
- When entering the house or apartment, remove shoes to prevent slipping on floor
- When entering a building, remove snow, water and ice from shoes to prevent slipping
